Annual summer festivals like Harbourfront Centre’s Beats, Breaks & Culture always feature amazing performers, and this year’s lineup is no different, with Datsik , The Heavy, TMDP and Kid Koala slated to turn heads.

Our Interactive Drawing Tool was a huge hit at last year’s Beats, Breaks & Culture, and this year we will be unveiling our new and improved version which we are sure the crowd is going to love. We will also be debuting an audience participation installation at the festival which we’re excited about, and we’ll keep you posted on that front as the details unfold! Look for us in the Brigantine Room on the July 9-11 weekend!

Musical Pong! This musical game has participants blow a ping-pong ball across a tabletop without letting it fall off the edge. Each table will have a distinct “family of sounds.” With several tables being played at once, the combined sounds of all the tables will create a fun, interactive and collaborative musical soundscape!

The HarbourKIDS festivals aim to engage kids and their families by encouraging their participation in activities that explore “Big Ideas” like respect, fearlessness and community through the lens of arts and culture. These Big Ideas challenge kids’ notions, validate and illuminate their values and ask some questions that aim to ignite imagination, creativity and thought.

“The attraction of Nuit Blanche is not just discovering new art, it satisfies our deep thirst for new ways to interact with each other. We’re social animals, online, at parties and on our streets. Instead of just being a passive audience we want new social interactions that create meaningful experiences. Sounding Space allows you to explore new social interactions in a fun and playful way ” exclaims Karlen Chang.

Karlen Chang, the lead artist in Sounding Space, is the principal designer for mixMotion. After countless VJ performances at parties, concerts and events since 2001, Chang realized that the heart of a successful event was the quality of the social experience. “The design of an event, a street corner or a social media website is vitally important. The amount of encouragement and opportunity to walk, sit, talk, dance and play strongly influences how we behave and interact with each other.”

Sounding Space was a collaborative art installation between Karlen Chang, Dafydd Hughes and David Mcallum.

As part of Nuit Blanche 2009, Sounding Space was one of the five Open Call projects chosen for Zone B in the financial district. This project was chosen by the curators Jim Drobnick and Jennifer Fisher of DisplayCult for the theme of NIGHTSENSE.

ASOT 450 included a live-to-air internet broadcast from The Guvernment nightclub, featuring top Dutch trance producer Armin Van Buuren alongside Arnej, Aly & Fila, Blake Jarrell, Sean Tyas, Signum and Simon Patterson of Van Buuren’s Armada Music label. A State of Trance is Armin Van Buuren’s weekly radio show, and to celebrate the 450th episode they put together a four city tour of Toronto, New York, Bratislava and Wroclaw.  Decadence is the huge annual spring party at Guvernment/Koolhaus, it also featured David Guetta and Sander Kleinenberg right next door in Koolhaus.

mixMotion VJs were a seamless part of the carefully orchestrated program. We mixed and triggered video, including the introductory videos for each DJ with accompanying audio that went out live on the broadcast as well as in the Guvernment. Live camera feeds were also switched from the broadcast booth to the Guvernment so the live crowd could see Armin as he hosted the show live on air. The night was a huge hit, with the broadcast being carried by over 60 online stations and both venues being filled to capacity.

Smirnoff needed their imagery on the screens in a way that reflected the spirit of the party theme Warehouse Invasion. mixMotion created custom logo treatments and put together a package of material for the live VJ set. We also provided creative and technical consulting for the night.

Local residents Manzone & Strong started things off for what turned into a huge crowd.  Marco V delivered a hard hitting yet emotionally uplifting night of music, foraying across progressive house, electro and trance to get the crowd moving. Ranked #8  nightclub in the world, The Guvernment was decked out in Chinese lanterns and brought out two Chinese Lion dancers to celebrate Chinese New Year, always a big party in Toronto. mixMotion echoed the theme, adding  iconic Chinese graphics and video to the mix.

It was a Dutch/German love affair at the annual trance all-nighter. Dutch trance pioneer Piet Bervoets (Rank 1) impressed with a deep opening set of moody, minimal music. mixMotion kept the visuals abstract using deep moody blue tones and sparse graphic imagery. The crowd was in love with Cologne Germany’s Blank & Jones, who kept it upbeat and played to the party vibe. Menno de Jong upped the Dutch trance quotient a notch, mixing long, blissful breakdowns that brought hands to the air. Sought-after German DJ and producer Alex Morph brought a luscious, ethereal edge to the night, taking things late before handing off to resident and local favorite Mark Oliver.
