Labour Of Love 2011

mixMotion provided visuals at the annual Labour of Love Labour Day weekend event at The Guvernment and Koolhaus. Visuals were projected inside the large tent outside as well as in the entrance to the Koolhaus. Inside the building our VJs mixed live visuals to a large roster of international DJs including Benny Benassi, Avicii, Crookers, Richie Hawtin and more!

We also set up a live Twitter feed in the Guvernment entrance and the tent so fans could follow what was happening around the club. The wildly popular event took place over two days this year throughout the entire complex, bringing in thousands of partygoers.

Steve Angello and company pulled out all the stops for their 2011 Size Matters Tour. The Guvernment in Toronto was filled to bursting with a sweaty, enthusiastic crowd covered in CO2 smoke and confetti as Steve Angello, Max Vangeli and Mark Oliver kept the energy high all night.

Deadmau5 Unhooked – Boxing Day

mixMotion performed live visuals for the return of local hero Deadmau5 to the Guvernment for what appears to be becoming an annual Boxing Day event. The packed crowd chanted for Deadmau5 in anticipation of him taking the stage. The stage featured a large wall of 16 LCD screens that created an impressive video backdrop to Deadmau5′s performance.

mixMotion Visuals At Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange

mixMotion performed live visuals and created custom content for the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange in Toronto. The event was the culmination of a year-long campaign by Smirnoff in which musical acts and nightlife culture were exchanged by 14 cities across the globe. Toronto was paired with Bangalore, India and for the night the Munition Factory was transformed with the sights and sounds of an Indian marketplace.

The challenge for the night was to create an Indian-themed night that reflected the look of the advertising campaign that had been built up over the past year. To promote the final event, Smirnoff held promotional parties across Canada in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. mixMotion created a custom DVD featuring VJ mixes of Canadian imagery and the Nightlife Exchange branding that travelled to each of these parties.

We worked closely with Smirnoff’s promotional team to coordinate the use of their Nightlife Exchange material into a visual mix that subtly promoted Smirnoff while keeping the visuals upbeat and focused on the vibe of the event – especially concerning brightness, color scheme and pacing. We continued the look and feel constructed for the cross-Canada events into the final Toronto event. The night included a mix of popular musical acts from Toronto and India, including Dragonette, Isis Salam of Thunderheist, Shaa’ir + Func, and Jalebee Cartel. For each act we crafted a different visual look, incorporating Indian imagery, Nightlife Exchange material, our own VJ material and imagery of the performers which we mixed live.

As the event was taking place simultaneously across, we incorporated a continuously realtime updated motion graphic showing the progress of the other global events into our visuals. All visuals were displayed on a large LED wall covering the back of the stage. We also created a custom projection for the VIP area showing a stylized cityscape with time-lapse clouds and night sky drifting overhead with the lights in buildings bouncing to the beat of the music.

The event was a huge success, selling out despite the bitter cold outside. Inside was a warm, inviting space featuring many aspects of Indian life including a marketplace featuring food vendors, henna hand painting and live musicians.

mixMotion Visuals at Labour of Love 2010

mixMotion provided visuals in the main room and the tent and implemented technical video support in the Koolhaus during Labour of Love 2010, The Guvernment nightclub’s annual Labour Day weekend event and generally its largest event of the year.

Above & Beyond, the headliner in the Koolhaus, had played a gig in New York the same afternoon. They needed to arrive in Toronto and go straight on-stage with their visual setup ready to go. mixMotion worked with the DJs and the technical suppliers to ensure that the show went off without a hitch.

In the main room we VJ’d for some big names including Axwell, Afrojack and Kissy Sell Out, while outside at the tent we installed an array of projectors to cover the entire inside of the massive canopy with visuals.

Architectural Projections at Havana Cultura 2010

mixMotion created an immersive and architectural visual experience for a Cuban inspired concert for Havana Club in Toronto. The concert featured renowned UK Producer/DJ Gilles Peterson along with Roberto Fonseca, Danay and many other incredible Cuban artists. The event was the showcase finale for Havana Cultura, a yearly week-long festival and celebration of Cuban music and culture.

The Great Hall was the perfect venue for the event. mixMotion provided the concept and production for creating a panoramic wrap-around visual environment. We achieved this by projecting video and motion graphics onto three sides of the venues interior walls and a huge projection that covered the ceiling. The idea was to highlight the unique interior features of the venue by customizing our projections to match the curves and shapes of the interior elements of the arches, pillars and ceiling.

The musicians performed in front of a large custom screen that filled the back of the stage, where our VJ’s mixed video and motion graphics live to the performance. The projected video featured scenes of the performers as combined with textural elements and Havana Club branding . Around the curved edge of the ceiling we created panoramic scenes which surrounded the guests with views of the skyline and streets of Havana, while the entire ceiling was filled with animated Cuban flag motifs. We were able to create a lively and unique atmosphere that added to the excitement of the venue and the capacity crowd.

Smirnoff Graphic Party Featuring Deadmau5

We recently completed the Smirnoff Experience party featuring T.O.’s own Deadmau5. The VIP industry party had a graphic novel theme and was entitled “Graphic”. The environment featured a comic book style narrative that followed guests from the street entrance into the party upstairs and reflected thier unfolding story throughout the night.

mixMotion’s contributions began from creative concept designs to final production. We created and projected custom animated comic panels for the large warehouse style windows. A custom designed projection screen was created in the style of a comic book panel for the DJ booth. Special lighting was designed to create the illusion of comic book shading on the guests and the enviroment.

A live Twitter feed was projected in one lounge area, where partygoers’ tweets would show up instantly on the wall, and a live drawing photo area was also set up using video projection to capture photographs of guests as if they were part of the comic. As the night went on and Deadmau5 took to the DJ booth, we VJ’d live on multiple areas, a rear-projection behind the DJ booth, ghostly sheer panels from the ceiling as well as onto the huge window panels that covered the entire south wall, creating an immersive atmosphere emphasizing the mood, colour and theme of the event.

Video Document – Danny Howells at Footwork

This is a video we made for Heineken to document their event at Footwork in Toronto featuring the UK’s Danny Howells. The goal was to capture the essence of the event, to show how Heineken is involved in nightlife events focused on music. The difficulties were to do so in a non-intrusive way, without interfering with the DJ or the enjoyment of the clientele. Therefore we had limited lighting, mostly relying on available light. By actively participating in the night and moving around the venue we were able to find the special moments and document them, capturing enough footage to tell the full story.

Canada Day 2010

mixMotion celebrated a hot Canada Day 2010 by VJ’ing at the annual Guvernment/Koolhaus throwdown. Plenty of big names were out in force as Congorock, JFK of MSTRKRFT, Benny Benassi and Deadmau5 took over the venue along with a host of others. mixMotion was in the main room, providing visuals and getting into the spirit of the event.
